Rubbish, Roads, Rates and Water: Council to address the ‘Three Rs’ at community update events

Cook Shire Council is inviting all residents and stakeholders to attend either of two community update events taking place at the Cooktown Shire Hall on Tuesday 10 and 17 September 2024 at 4:30 pm.

Cook Shire Council is inviting all residents and stakeholders to attend either of two community update events taking place at the Cooktown Shire Hall on Tuesday 10 and 17 September 2024 at 4:30 pm. These update events will focus on key areas of rubbish services, road projects, rates notices, and water supply.

Mayor Robyn Holmes emphasised the importance of these events in ensuring that residents stay informed and engaged with the work of the Council.

“These events are an opportunity for us to update the community and to listen to the concerns and ideas from our residents,” Mayor Holmes said. “We have several significant projects underway. These sessions are a chance for the community to find out what’s going on, ask some questions and get involved in shaping the future of our Shire.”

The agenda will cover a broad range of topics, including the changes in waste operations and free dumping days, major roadworks such as the Bloomfield Road and Cameron Creek projects, and crucial updates on the Annan Water Treatment Plant. Council will also provide insights into the recent property revaluations and the subsequent rates smoothing process, the 2024-25 budget considerations and how the community can be involved in next year’s budget process.

CEO Brian Joiner highlighted Council’s commitment to enhancing communication and better engagement with the community.

“Effective communication and genuine community engagement are a priority for this Council,” Mr. Joiner said. “The success of these events relies on community participation, so we encourage everyone in the community to attend. We want to work together to address the challenges and opportunities facing our Shire.”

The meetings will conclude with a question and answer session, providing attendees with the opportunity to ask questions and engage directly with Council representatives.
